New Metonyms: Bosnia & Herzegovina

Countries are reduced to their metonyms.
England is Big Ben. Russia is the Kremlin. France is the Eiffel Tower. Croatia is beaches. Australia is the Opera House. Japan is Mount Fuji. Germany is beer. India is the Taj Mahal. Brazil is football. Egypt is pyramids. Switzerland is mountains.

– What is Bosnia & Herzegovina?

New Metonyms is a book that searches for an answer to this question through photography and writing.

About

Is Bosnia safe? Aren’t there landmines everywhere? Is the country developed?

These are just some of the questions people still ask of Bosnia & Herzegovina, as if the country were still in the midst of an active conflict. It’s also one of the reasons why this book has come into existence.

While Bosnia & Herzegovina is gaining a reputation as an unexplored gem of Europe, it’s still tied to mental associations of war. 26 years after the Bosnian War ended in 1995, echoes of the disastrous conflict still haunt the country’s land— especially its international image.

Through photography, writing and poetry, New Metonyms aims to create a poetic survey of Bosnia & Herzegovina by showing contemporary landmarks, monuments, emblems and cultural signifiers that have no association to its wars.
